Explore the amazing activities on your to-do list, dream of scenic beaches and epic hikes, and book cheap flights to some of the world's most amazing destinations. Planning helps you manage your trip and envision all the great adventures you'll have. Less fun (but just as important) is finding the right travel insurance for your trip.

Reading the fine print, looking for reliable reviews, and choosing the best plan can be a bit of a chore. It can be a little overwhelming at times. There are hundreds of companies offering seemingly similar plans. But they all have different prices too. which one is the best? Which assessment is correct?

To help you figure it all out, I wanted to share my thoughts on the best travel insurance companies out there.

Our Top Choice:

Security wing

Safety Wing Insurance logo Safety Wing is one of his newer players in the travel insurance industry. A Norwegian startup based in California with a particular focus on remote workers and digital nomads. For me they are the best company. They offer robust policies at really affordable prices.

Here's an overview of the Safety Wing:

  • Offer affordable monthly plans with overages
  • A plan that can be purchased at home before going to overseas
  • Applications can be submitted online
  • Maintain your health insurance for 30 days in your home country after staying abroad for 90 days
  • Up to 2 children under 10 years old per family (up to 1 adult) stay free
  • Up to USD 5,000 for trip interruption (no excess)
  • Perfect for digital nomads and frugal travelers

This plans are also cheap. It's nice that they offer a flat monthly rate (based on coverage and age), but there is a $250 USD medical deductible you'll have to pay.

Plus, electronics such as phones, laptops, and cameras are not covered, and in this day and age, that's just crazy. (If the items are checked luggage and are lost/stolen, you can get reimbursed up to $500 USD per item, but who ever checks their expensive items?)

Pros

  • Super affordable
  • Offers some COVID-19 coverage
  • Backed by a single insurance company
  • Covers up to age 69

Cons

  • Deductible
  • No trip cancellation coverage (and only minor trip delay coverage)
  • Payout by check and wire transfer only (no direct deposit)
  • Limited coverage for your gear and adventure activities

Safety Wing is a good option for anyone traveling on a tight budget who just needs basic coverage. If you want some medical coverage, don't care about your electronics or robust trip cancellation or interruption, and just want an inexpensive plan, Safety Wing is the best.

Monthly plans start at $42 USD per month (plus a $250 USD deductible) for travelers 18-39 years old. If you travel to the US, the monthly plan costs $77 per month.

If you just want the basic 'big things covered' then this company is for you.

Medjet

Medjet is the premier membership program for medical transportation. Its extensive plans focus on crisis response and emergency transportation, and it has amazing staff on hand to help you through it all.

While many insurance companies will just evacuate you to the nearest hospital in an emergency, Medjet goes above and beyond to ensure that you're repatriated (i.e. sent back to the country you live in) and not stuck in a foreign medical facility away from your friends and family.

There are both short-term and annual plans, too, so no matter what your travel plans are, you'll be able to find the affordable coverage that you need.

Here's a quick overview of Medjet:

  • Extensive medical transport coverage that will get you home
  • Allows you to determine to which medical facility to be moved
  • Does not require government-issued warnings to initiate evacuation
  • Medical transfer available in the US as well as abroad
  • Limited time spent in foreign medical facilities
  • Both short-term and annual plans
  • Available for residents of the US, Canada, and Mexico

Pros

  • Will get you home (not just to the nearest “acceptable” medical facility)
  • Affordable annual plans
  • Two tiers of coverage:
  • basic and premium plans
  • Offers global coverage for COVID-19
  • Offers coverage up to age 74 (with potential extended coverage to 84)

Cons

  • Only available to North American travelers (US, Canada, Mexico)
  • No trip cancellation, trip delay, or baggage coverage
  • Medjet is the perfect company for anyone looking to avoid time spent in foreign medical
  • facilities should an emergency or crisis occur.

A great addition to a more basic travel insurance plan. This is especially helpful if you are worried about your transportation back home.

Annual plans start at just $315 per person.

Insure your trip

Insure My Trip is not really an insurance company that issues its own plans. Rather, it recommends plans and compares prices to help you buy the plan that works best for you. Think Skyscanner. But for travel insurance.

With Insure My Trip, you can compare plans from 23 different insurance providers. It's a great company for senior travelers since many of the providers on the service offer coverage for those over 65. Moreover, they offer “cancel for any reason” insurance, so, if you cancel your trip for any reason, even ones not listed under regular policies, you'll get a percentage of your trip back.

Here's a quick overview of Insure My Trip:

  • Guaranteed low prices
  • Coverage for senior travelers over 65
  • Anytime advocates ( ask the insurer to give a claim a second look if you think it was unfairly denied)
  • Comparisons from 23 different companies to ensure you get the best plan
  • Accommodation coverage if quarantined at your destination
  • Reviews of each policy so you can see what other travelers are saying
  • Coverage for travelers on cruises

Pros

  • Tons of plans available
  • Options for senior travelers
  • Assistance with denied claims
  • Offers cancellation for any reason plans

Cons

  • Since it's a third-party service, you're dealing with a middleman.
  • Insure My Trip is an aggregator, so prices vary depending on your destination, country of residence and travel plans.

Insured nomad

Insured Nomads offer standard travel insurance, but where they excel is long-term travel protection.

I think this company is perfect for expats and digital nomads looking for a strong insurance plan that covers regular doctor visits, medication and other routine treatments. Also mental health care and telemedicine We also offer

Most travel insurance is emergency insurance. The Insured Nomad's International Health Insurance covers routine visits and emergencies. It's more expensive than a normal insurance plan, but it's perfect for those who work abroad because it offers a lot of coverage.

Advantage

  • Both emergency and routine care are covered
  • mental health coverage
  • Prescription drug, maternity and vaccination coverage
  • Family plan and couple plan available
  • Telemedicine
  • You can choose your deduction amount
  • Plan coverage up to €1,000,000

Cons

  • Prices vary, you need to get a quote to apply
  • Your fully comprehensive insurance is expensive without a deductible
  • Plan prices vary greatly depending on the origin and destination.
  • A Canadian traveler moving to Portugal costs just $200 a month, while an American backpacker backpacking around the world costs about $500 a month.

Although costly, this plan is designed for remote workers and travelers who need extra care while working or traveling around the world.

Awards:

  • credit card coverage

Although not the most comprehensive, many travel credit cards include some degree of travel insurance. Insurance coverage is often limited and may only apply to travel or items purchased with the card. Also, coverage data may be limited.

However, it's better than nothing.

While it may be tempting to opt for a free insurance plan from your credit card company, those plans are usually not very comprehensive, with minimal coverage and/or limited coverage. These free plans are great to use as supplementary insurance on top of any of the company's plans above.

But it's always nice to have options (especially free ones). Before your next trip, be sure to research the best travel credit cards (read the fine print).

If you're traveling with a lot of expensive equipment and electronics and want to be sure you're covered, consider Clements insurance. While they are not as convenient to purchase insurance as the companies above (you must request a quote by email or phone), they do offer higher insurance if you need equipment or electronics.
